Dominica Climate Guide
Climate Overview
Dominica has a tropical rainforest climate and is one of the wettest islands in the Caribbean. The dry season runs from January to mid-April, with the wet season from mid-June through November driven by the northward migration of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone.
Annual rainfall varies enormously by location: the western coast around Roseau receives approximately 2,000 mm79 in, while the mountainous interior receives up to 7,000 mm276 in, among the highest totals in the Caribbean.
Daytime highs at the coast are a stable 29-31 °C84-88 °F year-round, with overnight lows of 21-24 °C70-75 °F. Northeast trade winds provide some cooling at the coast but are forced sharply upward by the island's extreme terrain, triggering the heavy orographic rainfall that defines Dominica's climate.

Hurricane History
Dominica's location in the Windward Islands places it directly in the path of Cape Verde-type hurricanes. Hurricane David (1979, Category 4) struck with 240 km/h150 mph winds, killing 56 people and leaving 75% of the population homeless.
It was the worst disaster in modern history until Maria. Hurricane Dean (2007) also caused severe infrastructure damage estimated at 58% of GDP.
Tropical Storm Erika (2015) demonstrated that for mountainous islands, rainfall can be more destructive than wind. Despite being only a tropical storm, it dumped up to 850 mm33 in of rain, triggering catastrophic mudslides that killed 30 people and caused damage estimated at 90% of GDP.
The village of Petite Savanne was buried and had to be permanently evacuated.
Hurricane Maria (2017, Category 5) made direct landfall with 260 km/h160 mph winds. It was the first Category 5 to strike Dominica, killing 65 people and damaging or destroying 95% of the housing stock. Damage was estimated at 226% of GDP.
Geography & Terrain
Dominica is the most mountainous island in the Lesser Antilles, covering 750 km²290 sq mi with a volcanic spine running northwest to southeast. Morne Diablatins, the highest peak at 1,447 m4,747 ft, is a dormant stratovolcano in the north, while Morne Trois Pitons (1,342 m4,403 ft) anchors the UNESCO World Heritage-listed national park in the south.
The park contains the Boiling Lake, the world's second-largest hot lake, along with numerous fumaroles, hot springs, and volcanic craters. Roughly 60% of the island is covered in tropical rainforest, sustained by the extreme orographic rainfall.
Trade winds hitting the steep terrain are forced upward, producing an enhancement factor of 2 to 8 times the coastal rainfall. Dominica is known as "The Nature Island of the Caribbean" and is said to have 365 rivers, one for every day of the year. The steep terrain and narrow coastal lowlands make the island particularly vulnerable to flash flooding and landslides during heavy rainfall events.
