Saint Kitts and Nevis Climate Guide
Climate Overview
Saint Kitts and Nevis has a tropical maritime climate with a dry season from January through April and a wet season from July through November. Annual rainfall along the coast averages around 1,150 mm45 in, but rises sharply with elevation.
The forested slopes of Mount Liamuiga and Nevis Peak can receive over 2,000 mm79 in per year due to orographic lift from the moisture-laden trade winds. October is typically the wettest month, while February and March are the driest.
Daytime highs range from 29 °C84 °F in winter to 31 °C88 °F in summer, with overnight lows between 23 °C73 °F and 26 °C79 °F. The northeast trade winds blow year-round, generally at 15-20 km/h9-12 mph, moderating the heat and humidity. Average relative humidity is around 70%, though it feels higher during the wet season when the trades ease.

Hurricane History
Saint Kitts and Nevis lies in the main development region for Atlantic hurricanes, and over 80 tropical cyclone events have been recorded in its post-Columbian history. Hurricane Hugo (1989, Category 4 in the Leeward Islands) passed near the islands on September 17 with winds that left about 20% of the population homeless, caused one death, and inflicted $46 million in damage to shoreline structures and crops. Hurricane Luis (1995, Category 4) tracked northeast of the islands, causing severe beach erosion on the west coast of Nevis, leaving at least 2,000 residents homeless, and resulting in $197 million in losses.
Hurricane Georges (1998, Category 3) made a direct hit on Saint Kitts on September 21 with sustained winds near 185 km/h115 mph, damaging 80 to 85% of homes on Saint Kitts, killing five people, and causing an estimated $458 million in damage.
Hurricane Lenny (1999, Category 4) followed an unusual west-to-east track in November, generating 6 m20 ft waves that washed 180 m600 ft inland and caused $41 million in damage. More recently, Hurricane Irma (2017, Category 5) passed north of the islands, causing approximately $20 million (EC$53 million) in combined damage, mainly to infrastructure and agriculture.
Geography & Terrain
Saint Kitts and Nevis is a dual-island nation with a combined area of 261 km²101 sq mi, located in the northern Leeward Islands. Saint Kitts (168 km²65 sq mi) is an oval-shaped volcanic island with a narrow southeastern peninsula. Its dominant feature is Mount Liamuiga, a dormant stratovolcano rising to 1,156 m3,793 ft, the highest point in the former British Leeward Islands.
Nevis (93 km²36 sq mi) lies 3 km2 miles to the southeast across The Narrows, a shallow channel. Nevis Peak, another stratovolcano, rises to 985 m3,232 ft and is frequently capped in clouds.
The volcanic peaks create a pronounced rainfall gradient. Moisture-laden trade winds are forced upward as they cross the mountains, producing heavy rainfall and cloud forest above 900 m2,953 ft, while the lower coastal areas remain considerably drier.
The steep terrain also means that most residents live near the coast, where temperatures are moderated by sea breezes. The low-lying southeastern peninsula of Saint Kitts, made up of salt ponds and scrubland, offers no high ground and is particularly exposed to hurricane storm surge.
